ADD and Concerta
Mar 17, 2005
Hi Everyone!
I'm a 22 year old college student and need some help!! I just got diagnosed with Adult inattentive ADD and am on Concerta. I have a few questions about concerta. I heard that people lose their appetite from medicines. If so, why am I as hungry or more so than usual? is this normal? I think concerta helps me focus but I think I Should be focusing even better so am thinking of increasing my doseage from 36 mg to 54 mg. I will ask my doctor first of course. Anyway, I just want to be normal and be able to study. How long does it take for concerta to really help a person? I started it last Wednesday. I don't know what to expect. I do know that this helps though. I'm distracted less and i'm more attentive and focused. But I want to learn all that I can on ADD and concerta. I have a very hard time reading when there is noise and especially if it is boring...I still have a hard time with the medication. I have hypersensitive ears and loud noises drive me crazy. Does anybody else with ADD have hypersensitve ears? Also, for the first few days of taking Concerta i seemed even more forgetful. I lost my ID card for school and bought a new one the next day and then found the old one...lol. So frustrating! Then I forgot my backpack when I was going to class and had to come back for it which made me a little bit late. or I'll lose something and it will be right in my hand. I do think I might be getting better with that now but the first few days on concerta seemed even worse than normal. Also, the doctor was all like telling me that concerta causes sleeplessness. I am able to sleep every night when i lay down to go to bed at midnight or so. I guess its because I take the medicine early enough but I was thinking that even taking it early enough I'd still struggle getting to sleep for the first few days. Does anybody knows about this? have you had trouble sleeping with the once a day 12 hour concerta pill? because I sure havent. Although, I have been waking up early in the morning and not being able to sleep! I hate that! I used to be able to sleep in better! I've always been a light sleeper but now even more so. My room mate is always waking me up by moving around and making noise in the morning. Anyway I just have so much to talk about but I'll write more later. Does anybody else have INattentive ADHD? if so, tell me how you are and what medication you use and anybody who knows about concerta feel free to tell me more about it. thanks!
I cannto speak about Concerta but I take ritalin, which is the active ingredient in Concerta. I take the regular Ritalin but have just quit the long acting stuff. I have never had to many sleep problems with it, but did with the long acting. My appetite could be better but I have gotten used to effects. I work out very heavily so it helps with my sleep and appetite.

The meds have been good for me. They are not the "end all be all" but they help as a guide. I am 35 years old and was dx'd eight months ago and have been onthe meds since. What I have taken from this is how to do the things I have to do-- LIKE I am on the meds, but without being on them. I do take these daily but have taken weekends off as well as soem days where I dont feel the need. You are new to this so dont over analyze it. It helped me failry quickly. At first it did nothing because the dose was not high enough. Once we adjusted it, it was like "ah...now I know what they are talking about". I am still new to this too. The long acting stuff lasted way too long. I will take the crash of the regular stuff (afetr it wears off) to the too long effects of the long acting ritalin. The long acting stuff made me feel hungover and wakig up was very difficult some mornings. Maybe my dosage is too high. But it works. I cannto believe that I did not get cjecked for this years ago. I always knew it was the case

good luck

Hey princessbride,
First off, I'm a 29 y/o female that was just recently prescribed ritalin 2 weeks ago. I just wanted to share the fact that I couldn't BELIEVE this, but when I registered for classes yesterday, I LEFT my bookbag THERE and luckily it was at the lost and found this morning, lol. :D So, I think I need an increase too(currently taking 10 mg 3x a day). I'm thinking about trying out concerta but my appt aint till the 1st of april. I lost 5 pounds on this medication, and I did notice a huge decrease in my appetite. And, I also sleep like a baby...I could go to sleep on these meds with NO problem. My diagnosis is ADD which is classified as the "slower thinker" and memory problems. And, I think the meds are helping me with better focus during my studying but we will see, my test is on the 29th. I know that concerta is the same substance as what i'm taking(methylphenidate) but I just have to pop a few extra pills and I hate that. I feel like such a mental case, :D oh well, talk to ya later. :)

Oh, and I also noticed I grind my teeth alot on these meds? Do you? Does anybody?

Oh, heavens yes!!! Noise drives me out of my mind!

To try to answer some of your questions....

Medicine affects everyone differently. Although most people experience some loss of appetite when beginning stimulants, not everyone does. And while some people have trouble with insomnia, some find that stimulants actually make them sleepy. If I take Concerta too late, I can't sleep. My son, however, can take his Metadate (same thing, a long-acting methylphenidate) and go straight to sleep.

How long does it take to work? Concerta, like the other stimulants, work immediately. It isn't likely to work any better than it is now. And, in fact, you may find that you develop some tolerance to it and that it works LESS effectively. That's why learning some new life skills at the same time is important. You might check at your college health center to see if they offer any groups for ADD'ers.
I haven't much experience with Conterta other than giving it to our son when he was first diagnosed with adhd. Before giving it to him I did a lot of research. One of the possible side effects with Concerta is over time you could develop a tick or twitch and possibly even terrets (sp?) syndrome. We gave our son one capsule with the lowest possible dose and he came home from school that day with a tick. THIS HAPPENED AFTER ONLY ONE PILL!!!! We stopped giving it to him immediately and it took three days for the effects to wear off. He was unable to keep his mouth still. Not talking, but, it was as if he had something stuck in the back of his mouth and was unable to get it out. He never even realized he was doing it. The poor thing had no control over his mouth. To disguise it from his friends we kept giving him gum to chew. That seemed to help. Because Concerta is a stimulant and a "cousin" to Ritalin, we have decided that that course of action is not an option for him. He currently takes a split dose of Strattera and is doing fine. When you mentioned that you seem to be grinding your teeth, it made me think of my son's reaction to Concerta.

As far as the sleep thing. I take Wellbrutin and have found to have those side effects as well. They haven't seem to subside since Istarted taking it 4 yearsago. I find that 1 Tylenol PM at bedtime works. My doctor says this is safe. I find that if I don't, I can't keep my mind quiet and will lay in bed awake for hours. Hope this is helpful. Please be very careful with any meds your are taking or are considering. Do as much research as possible before staring anything new. Best of luck!
