Also, what makes you think their ADD was mild?
You answered your question quite nicely for me...
For one thing, my nephew was not ADD, he was diagnoised with ADHD. He's not having problems now off the drugs.
For those of us with, or who have children with, severe ADHD there is no such thing as "not having problems now". Medication can help, but it doesn't cure the problem. The statistics about the increased risks of ADHD refer to these individuals, not to those who are "not having problems". It is the severely effected who are the kids that you yourself referred to when you wrote this:
Many ADD kids are taunted, teased, have problems with parents and drug use is the perfect way to rebel and also to fit in.
Those are the children at increased risk for drug use, for automative accidents, for dropping out of school, and for suicide.

When you can suggest something that has been proven as effective as medication, I'll be all ears!!!

Then obviously, the diagnosis of ADD and ADHD is quite flawed, wouldn't you say? ...Not to mention unprovable by biological science....they have not one real diagnostic biological test for diagnosis. Nor do they know how the child's brain is really being affected by the drugs.

My nephew is fine, yes, I meant in the sense that the adverse effects caused by the drugs are now gone, but he is not without some of his original "problems" but a new, better teacher the next year PLUS his parents using other techniques like tutoring, involving him in sports and their own change in expectations, less pressure to do well in school seemed to really help him.

I doubt if he is ever going to be what most people would call normal, no doubt his ADHD will always show (it still does at times) but it's a choice by his parents to let him be what he is. We have seen improvements these last 2 years due to their efforts and maybe maturity who knows.

Drugs like stimulants are already known to have adverse effects to body and mind. Of course they are "effective", I never said stimulants don't work.

But are they healthy to ingest your whole life is debatable. Also the unknown effects during the growing stages. Deregulation of brain receptors can have dire consequences, along with other effects of the drugs can have ill effects on the body.

Look, this is turning into a debate which is not useful, other than nitpicking every phrase and word. The real issue here is the danger/damage the drugs used may be doing to brain and body to those who ingest them for a long time.....that's my concern.

Addprogrammers' concern was about addiction but it seems he has that particular issue under control to the point that I am convinced he is not an addict anymore. An addict would not hand over control of his pills to his wife.

So lets just say you continue to believe what you want, take your pills, and I'll continue to believe what I want, and not take pills. Our information and conversations hopefully will aid some readers in making their own personal decisions.
