I just posted a message where I said people should get "tested" for ADD before taking any drugs. I should have said "evaluated," actually. There is no true "definitive" test for ADD that I as yet know of, but psychologists do give tests such as IQ tests, interview parents, and so on. My son was diagnosed with it by a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and we agreed to have him go on a stimulant. However, after talking with another therapist, I decided to have him "evaluated" by a psychologist. She said that her findings agreed with the earlier diagnosis.

As I have mentioned before, I think the books by Hallowell and Ratey on ADD are excellent, and I recommend them to anyone who is wondering about this diagnosis. Their first book was "Driven to Distraction." It is now a classic. What's great about them is that they both have ADD and are both medical doctors.
