Because Ritalin is still a brand name it may not be as cheap as you think. You have already said that the generic long acting ritalin isn't working well for you so you best bet would be to discuss all of these issues with your doc. Tell him about your hardship of not being able to afford the Concerta and how the generic Ritalin long acting doesn't work quite as well. You doc will help you figure out what to do. If have a definate hardship you can always appeal to the manufacturer of Concerta to see if they offer any help. Many times if you appeal to a drug company they can offer some assistance.
I just wanted to comment that Neither drug is a Generic - the actual "generic" name of the drug they both contain is Methylphenidate- which is the same component of Ritalin.

The difference in these medications is how it is delivered (capsule vs tablet) and how it is absorbed into the body. They are both time released medications, however Metadate delivers an initial rapid release of methylphenidate followed by a second continuous release phase, whereas the Concerta uses system that relies on osmotic pressure to deliver the active medication- this is why you are noticing a difference in how long the medication works in your system.

Hope this helps!!
