... Flintrock, this was very disturbing to read... that your friend died at 32 after becoming addicted to this medication. Was it the medication, or was ur friend maybe predisposed to cardiovascular disease? My pych of 3 years just recently put me on adderall 20mg 2x/day. He did not test me for ADD/ADHD,... (8 replies)
Adderall Abuse

... ing a phych about my issues. After several months of meeting with me, he diagnosed me with ADD and it was like a ligt bulb went off. I REALIZED THAT I WAS JUST SELF MEDICATING MYSELF FOR ALL OF THOSE YEARS, TO TRY AND FEEL NORMAL. ... (16 replies)

Need some support
Dec 12, 2004
... Thanks for the feedback, just wondering if you are a student of medicine or are you approximately my son's age. Either way perhaps you can help me in determining how to "punish" an 18 year old, considered by law to be an adult. He doesn't drive (can't take the keys away), isn't living at home right now (can't take the keys away), has limited access to money (cash flow is very... (18 replies)

... Either way you cannot just attribute his drug use to self medicating. That is a total cop out. He needs to be punished for it just like any teen who had no mental health probs would be. ... (18 replies)
... First congradulations on starting the proper treatment. Second don't get discouraged if Strattera doesn't work. It may or may not, and many people have to try more than one drug before they find one that works with their biochemistry. Unfortunately finding the right med and dose may take a little while, and the only way to find out currently is trial and error. No, AD/HD... (41 replies)
... means. Its long term ill effects are well known and well documented as well as that of cigarette smoking. But I believe its up to the individual to decide that. Medicating is medicating whether it be administered by a Doc or by your "self. ... (41 replies)
Adderall Abuse
Jul 23, 2007
... Goody, ADD_slacker is no slacker. Legitamacy runs rampant through his post. My guess is if I were dxed and treated early enough, I too would have saved years of extreme methamphetamine addiction. The problem may go to motive. I detect in ADD_slacker the same attitude that I had - namely - "I don't want to do this (abuse drugs) but I don't know how not to do this. What's... (16 replies)
Caffine and ADD
Feb 20, 2005
... Caffiene is weaker than amphetamines but certainly can work. What's wrong with self-medicating with a substance that isn't even on a controlled substance list (like amphetamines are)....that alone tells you which is safer and which has less side effects. If caffeine had as many complications and dangers, it would be a controlled substance. We could say I self-medicate... (50 replies)
... Many are naturally drawn to caffeine, or worse, further up the line. So, a regulated dose of an Rx stimulant or let them wander into a way of medicating themselves? ... (27 replies)
... ADDer, but it has the opposite effect on someone with ADD. At least that is my case and others as well. I guess the question would be, were you self medicating to numb anxiety? ... (4 replies)
... y practically guarentees that if an ADD child does not take medication, they will become addicts as teens. This may not be true at all but it scares parents into medicating their kids. ... (9 replies)
... Then why not stop the self-medicating and get your AD/HD treated properly? By smoking weed you *may* be helping *some* of the AD/HD symptoms, but you are ultimately making your AD/HD worse in the long run. And I don't mean health wise necessarily either. Marijuana decreases activity in the prefrontal cortex and makes your AD/HD worse. Since AD/HDers already have... (41 replies)
... " This can't be an accurate statement, because if you were "self-medicating", you did in fact take 'drugs' during that first 20 years, whether it was an illegal substance, cigarettes or alcohol, etc. Taking in any psychoactive chemical substance in significant amounts over a period of time could cause some chemical brain damage.... that can reverse without interferance of... To Have ADD
Mar 20, 2012
... So I've been on Adderall XR for various stints in the past but always end up stopping because I struggle with the thought of medicating myself and because of the crabby crash at the end of the day. Right now I am taking Vyvanse for the 4th week but really don't care for it. ... (4 replies)
... Hi. I'm new here too. I was diagosed 3 months ago and started adderall. What I have noticed is that after taking it for awhile and I build up a tolerance,I have to go off it for a day or two. When I start taking it again It works alot better. With the weight loss issue, I have lossed 30lbs and loving it. I am back to my prebaby weight again. As for lossing any more I don't... (11 replies)
... l Teacher mentioned this to us based on her behavior and academics in school. Actually, I have casually thought this about her and I guess I was just telling my self that she needed more time to learn how to go to school and that just maybe she learns differently or wasn't fully getting the academics. ... What is ADHD?

... I did a little research for myself you might find helpful. Info bracketed is unedited quotes from authoritative sources.
