Thanks Phil.

Soboxone will keep you from going into full-blown withdrawals but it is in the same class as opiates so it is addictive. However, my addictionologist tells me the withdrawals are not nearly as severe as with full-blown opiate withdrawals and this is especially true with a very slow taper schedule.

The suboxone also has some pain fighting properties without the fog and without tolerance issues. Therefore, it may be something you want to take a look at. However, there are only a handful of doctors that can prescribe it and it is usually only prescribed to hard core addicts (such as myself) who have relapsed time and time again.

I have to temper my comments about the drug because I truly feel like it has been a life saver for me -- I have been taking the suboxone for a couple of months now and I didn't have any withdrawals (after the dosage was titrated correctly) and I haven't had any depression (which has always been a big problem), nor do I have any cravings. I feel, for the first time in my life, what I perceive to be normal.

I think you should be very conscious of one thing Phil mentioned and that is the possibility that you can manage the pain without the narcotics. When your body goes into withdrawals, it screams out for those artificial endorphins you've been feeding your brain, and therefore, (since your body isn't producing the natural endorphins) you are going to hurt like hell. Which, in turn is going to make you think you really need the opiates when, in fact, it may just be withdrawals.

Try to get yourself detoxed and see how your body is feeling 30 days or so down the road without any opiates. That should be enough time for your natural pain killers to kick back in and will let you know whether you are an addict or a chronic pain patient. If you are the latter, then you shouldn't beat yourself up about taking the pills. However, I sense that you may view yourself as the former or you wouldn't be on here.

Take care and let us know if you have any other questions.
