Hi everyone,
I've been lurking a lot, but wanted to post because I have some experience with this topic.

My Doc also reassured me that coming off suboxone was very smooth and easy, as long as I tapered the right way. Well, sad to say, this was not true for me. I followed the taper instructions exactly, was only on it one month, and it was very, very awful to withdraw from. I was frustrated because I paid $900. for the month detox with suboxone, and while I felt fine when I was on it, going of hydro cold turkey would have been hard, but at least it would have been over in a week. With suboxone, the half life is so long that it takes longer to fully go through the nasty wds from it. This was just my experience. Everyone is different, so perhaps for some people the wds are easier.

I also wanted to comment on why Docs say to not take benzos with suboxone.
A study that was done in France (I think it was France, might have been Canada) showed that high doses of xanax taken with buprenorphine led to death. My Doc said a low dose of a benzo while on suboxone was ok, but not a high one. If you do a search on the web you might be able to find the results of this study, I did find it on the web once to prove to myself it was true, but I've lost the url. Just search for xanax and buprenorphine, or benzodiazepines and buprenorphine.

I hope this helps!
I have yet to see anywhere, or be told by my Doc, that taking a benzo with suboxone is illegal. The FDA did not make it illegal to take any other controlled substance with suboxone. They did put in a disclaimer saying that it was possibly dangerous to take it with benzos, and that some deaths were associated with high doses of xanax mixed with buprenorphine in addicts that were using buprenorphine IV.

As far as I know, there were no reported problems or deaths with people taking subutex or suboxone sublingually who were also taking a benzo. My Doc had me on a small dose of Valium while I was on suboxone for the first three days.

So no, I don't believe it is illegal.
Michelle,
Thanks for asking, My story is I started using Hydrocodone for pain after an auto accident 2 years ago. About a year into it I knew I had a problem. Tried to taper and wean myself but always failed. Last year I did try a methodone clinic, didn't like the way it made me feel. Stayed on it about six weeks and went off. The withdrawal from methodone was hideous way worse than Hydrocodone. So continued using until April of this year and went to inpatient facility. That was definitely the worse time of my life I left after two days. I did stay clean for about a month but the pain, lethargy and depression was overwhelming. So I started using again. About three months after that, a friend of mine told me about Suboxone. I did find a doctor but he only prescribed it for detox. I stayed on it for about a month. When he started to taper me down the depression came back and all of the cravings. I asked if he could leave me on it a little longer but he refused he only detoxes. That's when I got on the internet to find a doctor that does maintenance. I drive 2 1/2 hours once a month to get my medication but so far its been well worth it. Ya know I look back at all these posts and the negative things that I've read about Suboxone and I can honestly say I would do it again a million times it truly has saved my life. This last go around of relapsing just about did me in I don't think my body could have taken much more. So I might have to be on this drug for a long time because I'm scared of what might happen when I quit taking it. I feel more normal now than I have ever felt in years. It has really helped with the depression and cravings. I know how you feel about the anxiety part because I too have anxiety attacks. It's so funny I've been on Benzos for over 20 years off and on and never once abused them but those opiates sure got to me. Anyway that's a little about me thanks for asking. Take care.

P.S. This is great therapy! Just about as good as NA!

wakeup,i hope it works for you like the dr says but if the dr hasnt been addicted to opiates for several yrs and then put on suboxone for several months, then all he knows is what some college boy with a cheap necktie has told him to say about it.maybe it will work that way for ya,but everyone on here has had bad w/ds from the sub/bup and the maker of the sub/bup say that once you start takin sub/bup that you are to take it the rest of your life.think of the money they would make off just one person.if a person had several thousand dollars to invest, this might be a good investment in the stock market just think about it.im just sayin that nobody on here has got of sub/bup and not had bad w/ds and all have either gone back to usin or went to methadone or back to suboxone good luck with it and please let us know how it works for ya as alot of people are readin my threads on this-sparkie
