Michelle,
Thanks for asking, My story is I started using Hydrocodone for pain after an auto accident 2 years ago. About a year into it I knew I had a problem. Tried to taper and wean myself but always failed. Last year I did try a methodone clinic, didn't like the way it made me feel. Stayed on it about six weeks and went off. The withdrawal from methodone was hideous way worse than Hydrocodone. So continued using until April of this year and went to inpatient facility. That was definitely the worse time of my life I left after two days. I did stay clean for about a month but the pain, lethargy and depression was overwhelming. So I started using again. About three months after that, a friend of mine told me about Suboxone. I did find a doctor but he only prescribed it for detox. I stayed on it for about a month. When he started to taper me down the depression came back and all of the cravings. I asked if he could leave me on it a little longer but he refused he only detoxes. That's when I got on the internet to find a doctor that does maintenance. I drive 2 1/2 hours once a month to get my medication but so far its been well worth it. Ya know I look back at all these posts and the negative things that I've read about Suboxone and I can honestly say I would do it again a million times it truly has saved my life. This last go around of relapsing just about did me in I don't think my body could have taken much more. So I might have to be on this drug for a long time because I'm scared of what might happen when I quit taking it. I feel more normal now than I have ever felt in years. It has really helped with the depression and cravings. I know how you feel about the anxiety part because I too have anxiety attacks. It's so funny I've been on Benzos for over 20 years off and on and never once abused them but those opiates sure got to me. Anyway that's a little about me thanks for asking. Take care.

P.S. This is great therapy! Just about as good as NA!
I guess that I was lucky as I found a very knowledgable doctor. He put me on subutex. He told me that I could continue to take xanax as needed, but also that if I dosed in excess I could die. He also prescribed Ambien for me, Cymbalta to battle the inevitable depression, and several different non-narcotic muscle relaxants. I had started with vicodens, but when I went in I was using 160-240mg oxy a day. I started with 16mg, went to 8mg next week, then 6mg, then 3mg, then 2mg,then 1mg and just quit. The reason that the long half life is good, is that even when you drop doses, the amount of drug in your body drops gradually. The first day off was easy, 2nd day I was restless, but it was planned over a weekend, so i took some Ambien and slept through most of it. Third day off I felt better than I had in years. I wish that everyone could share the same story, but I guess I just got lucky. I had tried to taper/quit the oxys, and it was torture. I think the subutex saved my life. AS far as anyone trying to quit/taper, you need to tell someone who can help you through it. I never told my wife about any of my drug use, but I told her about my problem before I went into treatment. She was so supportive, and it was no longer just my dirty little secret. Hope this helps someone
