Ok. My story. My husband hurt his back while working 3 yrs ago (2 herniated disks in his lower back- he's an electrician). He has tried several things to help it (physical therapy, massotherapy, tens, epidurals, facet blocks, etc). Nothing has worked. He was even considering surgery when he visited a spine specialist at the cleveland clinic last year. The doc pretty much told him that surgery would probably make his condition worse, and it's just something he's going to have to live with.

Anyway, in the past 3 yrs., he's been on several pain killers. It started off slow with ibuprofens, then vicodins, percocets, and in the past 10 months, oxycontins. I argued from the getgo that I didn't think he should be taking oxy's but he said that if they were bad, the doc wouldn't prescribe them. I could tell that in the past several months, he was definitely acting different, and I knew he would be out of the prescription way early than he should've, but all he would do is LIE. I think about all of those lies in the past year and I'm get sick. Well, 2 weeks ago, he finally hit rock bottom. He couldn't get any from the doc and none off the streets (yes, that was one of the lies), and he finally decided he needed help. He checked into a really good inpatient detox facility in northeastern Ohio 9 days ago. He's still at the point where he cannot sleep at all and is keeping a stomach ache. He took the suboxone only twice because he's afraid it'll end up just as habit forming as the oxys. He thinks he's having such a hard time because his doc had him on methadone for those 5 days it took him to get into the detox.

Questions for those who've gone thru detox: Did you go days and not be able to sleep? I know everyone is different but at what point in the detox did you really start to feel better?? Did taking the suboxone help or did you do it cold turkey?? Has anyone with an injury been able to take other painkillers after detox reasonably, or are you unable to take them after this??

I was in detox for 6 days at the very end of July for oxy, I will answer your questions the best I can!

1) I was given sleep meds in the detox, so I didn't have a problem sleeping at night.

2) I honestly started to feel better right away. I arrived there Wed at 6am, was brought right to the room I was to stay in to go to bed for a few hours. I was woken up by my roomate at 8am b/c she was packing to go home that morning. Every night after I slept great, though, b/c they gave me the sleep meds. I think I felt so good right away b/c I was willing & ready to get clean! I'd had enough of my old life, I wanted to enjoy life again - so I did, starting right away!

3) The sub's deffinitely helped me get through the W/D's. I at at the point now where I don't even feel like I need them. I feel I am just taking the 1 a day that I take to be sure that I am ok, but I am ready to get off them & will be seeing the dr Wed night.

Sorry, but I can't answer your last question. I was not on the oxy b/c of long-term lagitimate pain. I was using them b/c I liked the way they made me feel.

Good luck to your husband, I hope he can quit the addiction & find a way to still be pain free or at least comfortable. Unfortunately, by doing this he built up a higher tolerance for pain meds, so that might be hard when they are trying to figure out what he should be on to control the pain & not have him abusing the meds.

I went cold turkey off lortab (hydro 10/500) on easter sunday then I relapsed again cause I thought I could control my usage and control my pain. Then I slipped right back to where I was. Even though I do take one now and then for my pain I also make sure I have no access to my pills they are locked up in a safe and due to pride issues I have to be in horrible pain to even ask for one. Once you stop and get your brain semi back to normal and start taking them again you go right back where you were you wake you brain up again and it doesnt take long to slip even if you convince yourself you can control you addiction. When I got clean I was on cloud nine I was stronger than those pills I would never let them control me again!!!! Yeah right. Then the cravings set in and they were sooo bad the pills are all I could think about even 4mos later I find myself drooling for just one pill! It took about a month of stopping pills to get almost normal. I had no energy but couldnt sleep, my legs hurt so bad I think I could have cut them off the chills the sweats it was horrible. The sub might help him I went cold turkey with nothing but you also need to be weened off the sub too so I guess it depends on the determination and will power. It soo hard with chronic pain though cause you just want to be comfortable and semi able to function and you know a pill will help you for just a little while be comfortable and able to function. Its a long road but if he wants it he can do it. Look at boilerbob what an inspiration!! Kim
