Addiction & Recovery Message Board

Addiction & Recovery Board Index

Hi KatKat,

I'm Kate and I am an addict. I took percocets and oxycontin for back pain as well. It got out of hand when I started taking more pills (as you did) and I eventually resorted to buying off the street and doctor shopping - just to get more pills.

Kat, you have a problem, and I'm proud of you for admitting it. First of all, you should NOT try to wean yourself off. It won't work. I said that to myself SO many times and I always ended up taking the pills - in handfuls at a time.

I strongly adivse you to talk to your doctor. You'd be so surprised at how understanding doctors can be. I was nervous to tell mine, but with the help and advice from this board, I came clean and told him. He is helping me wean myself off. My husband gives me my doses each day - and I'm tapering over the course of about 2 - 3 months.

Its tough, very very tough, however coming "clean" to hubby and doctor was the best thing I've ever done.

Do you have anyone who can help you with your doses? Have you looked into Narcotics Anonymous? I was shocked at how helpful everyone was and still is. Its incredible.

You've already conquered your first step - admitting you are addicted and can't stop taking your pills. Believe me, its a hard thing to admit. However, the fact that you're here, talking to us, proves that you want help.

Stay with us on this board - you'll find SO many helpful people. Please talk to your doctor, and tell someone you're close with.

Good luck with everything, and I hope to keep in touch.

Hugs,
Kate
