Just a little info
Sep 25, 2007
Hey people, hope things are going well for you all, and for those of you who aren't doing well, hang in there and keep trying....you can do this.

Well, I got some info from my outpatient classes and thought I would share. Some of you probably already know this, but I didn't. And while it doesn't make staying clean any easier, I believe knowledge is a powerful tool.

Everyone has a molecule in their brain that acts like morphine and it send its chemical to these other things in our brain called opiate receptors. This is responsible for 3 things 1) uplifting our mood 2)motivation and 3) natural pain blocker. Well, when we use our pills the opiates in the drugs go straight to the receptors, and really douse them will HIGH amounts of this chemical. Amounts way way more than our body can produce naturally. Well, the molecule says "the receptors are getting the chemical, so screw it, I don't have to produce". Sometimes this molecule can wither up and die, or it can just stop producing altogether. When we decide to quit, it doesn't wake up...not right away anyway. So, even when we've weathered the acute w/d's, we sit there and wonder "why am I so depressed, and why can't I get motivated, and why does every bump and bruise hurt so badly?" Well, we've jacked with our brain molecule responsible for those things. I'm not sure when or if it gets back to working. A lot of it depends on what you used, how long you used it, and how you used it.

Most if not all of you have heard of methadone or suboxone. Those drugs help with these effects and with the cravings. I've chosen to wait it out and not use them, but to each his/her own. Some people say they owe their lives to these drugs, and if that's what it takes, by all means do it.

OK, I've rambled enough. I hope you all are still fighting the fight and winning. This has been a long, hard road, but I'm 32 days clean (got my 30 day tag at NA the other night ;) ) and if I can do it, you can too.
