[QUOTE=jeffster;4891417]Hey folks,

I'm a long time member who has suffered from oxycodone dependence for about a year and a half. I was here about a year ago getting help for quitting CT. I was semi-successful, in that I successfully quit for a couple of months, then started again like an idiot. Now, I've been on it for about a year straight, and quitting CT isn't as much of an option. I would appreciate any help from anyone familiar with suboxone, especially in Canada.

I went to a clinic, but the doctor was super abrupt and wouldn't even talk to me about options or anything. He was incredibly rude and just pushed me out the door saying to come back after being clean for 48 hours. Now, I know you have to be off oxycodone for some time before taking suboxone, but everywhere I've read is 12-24 hours, using the COWS test to find out when to take it. Basically he wouldn't help me unless I did this.

I called the addiction hotline in my province, and they said to go to my family doctor, which I did. At first, he told me to go to a clinic, and after trying two (one was the one I just explained, the other had a huge waiting list) he agreed to prescribe Suboxone. He's never prescribed it before, but wants to help me. He's a great Doctor, but that's beside the point.

I'm taking between 120 - 160 mg of oxycodone per day. My doctor and I looked at the conversion chart, and our guess is a starting dose of 6mg, MAYBE 8 will be required. From what I've read, they say you're supposed to start at 4mg, wait an hour, then add 2mg more if required. He wrote me a prescription for "2mg PO - starting dose 4mg PO daily. Quantity 30 - 2mg tabs. Seeing patient next week". Now, I have a couple of questions:

1. I understand that only certain pharmacies will dispense Suboxone. Does anyone know of any in the Greater Toronto Area, or can relate some personal experiences about how this is going to work?

2. Based on the prescription above, are they goint to let me take another 2mg if required? He says 4mg in his prescription, but prescribes 30 tabs, and he knows that 6 or 8 may be required. I'm terrified that I'm going to suffer for 24 hours, then go to the pharmacy and they won't be able to give me enough to feel better.

I know these are pretty specific questions, but I'm hoping someone here has some experience they can share.

Thanks everyone

I can help you out with the general Suboxone questions, but unfortunately I don't live in Canada so I can't help you with that part of it. I know in the United States there are only certain doctors that are allowed to prescribe Suboxone. I don't know what process they go through to be able to dispense it, but they used to be limited in the number of patients they were seeing on Suboxone to (I think it was) 30 patients per doctor.

As far as dosage goes, and again it may be different in Canada, but in the States Suboxone is prescribed in 2mg and 8mg form. Suboxone is VERY expensive, so i would try to get the smallest amount of pills or film necessary for you. 6mg seems like a pretty low dose, most people I have heard of start at either 16mg or 24mg. Keep in mind that after the first visit your dosage is almost never increased. The goal will be to get you off Suboxone after that, the time table for getting off is up to you and your doctor. I have been on for about 1.5 years now, and started at 32mg and am now down to 8mg and in the process of going to 4mg. Don't try to rush it, and make sure you get a high enough dose to cover your cravings. A proper dose will not only keep you out of withdrawal, but will actually stop the cravings for opiates and stop you from thinking about it.

I remember when I tried to quit years ago I would just obsess over the pills (oxycodone and hydro, not suboxone). It was like my every thought was on them. With the suboxone, you wont spend a minute thinking about it.

Good luck to you!
