I found that Gabapantin (Neurontin) does help some what to ease withdrawl. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant, also used off label for many different disorders including a mood stabilizer, an antianxiety medication, and for different types of pain especially nerve pain. I've also heard of a Doctor that uses it for Methamphetamine addiction. It is called the Prometa protocol and it consists of using therapy and counseling along with a combination of Gabapentin (Neurontin), hydroxyzine, (Atarax, Vistaril), and Flumazenil.
As for the withdrawl from Gabapentin it is different than opiate withdrawl. Alot of the symptoms I experienced were the same as Benzodiazepine withdrawl.
It was alot like when I came off of Clonazepam and you have to be careful because you can have seizures just like coming off of benzo's. But if your just using some for a week or so to help with opiate withdrawl you should be o.k., as long as you don't take them too long and be come dependant on them.
Overall the Gabapentin does help a little with withdrawl, but less than Valium.
