... I am a prescripton addict and have four years clean time. I have met many addicts throughout my recovery and one of them has been taking about 20 Benadryl and 5 Excedrin PM's a day (bedtime) for a very long time. This is one area I never explored and honestly don't know what kind of help she should seek or if there is any real damage that is being done. I never realized... (1 replies)

... Hi, this is the first time I have ever posted anything online. I am doing so now because I guess I am embarrassed to tell anyone I know. I don't know where else to turn. I have been taking anywhere from 225mg-275mg of diphenydramine (benadryl) everynight for the past 4 yrs to help me sleep. Everytime I try to stop or even wean down I get nauseated and begin vomitting so I... (3 replies)

... Lisa, I know it is difficult to beleive that someone can get hooked on them. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. The Benadryl made my mom real talky and hyper too. She was taking massive doses much like her husband. She is a long time pill addict. ... (10 replies)
... About a year ago, needing something to help me sleep, I decided to use an over the counter sleep medicine. Noticing that the chemicals in most of the pills was nothing but diphenhydramine, and knowing that was the ingredient of Benadryl, I took the more economical route and bought a bottle of the Benadryl. I started taking them, maybe 5 a so or night when I first started, and... (1 replies)

... I've heard/read about kids taking high amounts of benadryl to get a buzz, but from what I've read it's a pretty scary/bad trip. I, personally, don't get how they do it, because if I take two of the 25 mg, I'm asleep in 30 mins and stay asleep for a good 8-10 hours!! (10 replies)
... I have heard serveral addicts talk about Benadryl. most "old timers" avoid it. As addicts most everything has to be taken in moderation. ANYTHING that makes me feel good, lets me escape when I want, feeds any of my triggers can put me in a harmful place,. (10 replies)
... I don't know about mixing methadone with the OTC's your husband is taking. I did want to let you know that I have heard of people taking huge amounts of OTC drugs. My mother did this with Benadryl. At one point she had to go into a hospital to detox. I think they wanted to watch her to make sure she didn't have physical problems coming off. I had never heard of anyone... (10 replies)

... Here is what Dr. Dean Edell says "Tylenol itself is not addicting. The drugs that make up the P.M. part of it are mild antihistamines that are unlikely to cause physical addiction, but you can start to believe that you can't sleep without them." I have been taking antihistamines for most of my life, allergies. I also have used them before bed for sleep, never a need to... (3 replies)
... Hi. I've been having lots of anxiety lately due to an upcoming move out of state and career change. My therapist has diagnosed me as "adjustment anxiety" or something like that. I have a history of anxiety as well, off and on since I was a kid due to how I was raised. Long story I won't go into now. My doctor has prescribed Xanax 0.25mg, up to 3 times per day, as... ... Definitely talk to your physician. I would also suggest that you begin tapering down off of it slowly. Take a little less every couple of days until you are down to manageable levels (i.e., one or two tabs) and then try stopping it. Maybe once you are off of the benedryl your physician can prescribe something else for sleep. (3 replies)

... i haven't been through that personally but i definately think it is a good idea to talk to a helth profesiononal who can evalutate the state your body's in and formulate a plan. You shouldn't have to live like that, taking any drug for such a long time is harmful and the sooner you get help the better. No one in your personal life has to know anymore than you tell them,...
