Re: Licorice Root
Sep 11, 2004
I've heard about using Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) to supplement adrenals from several sources including "The Mood Cure" by Julia Ross and "Adrenal Fatigue, the 21st Century Stress Syndrome" by James L. Wilson.

According to Julia Ross, If you have normal to low blood pressure, not high blood pressure, you can sometimes raise your cortisol levels in a hurry by using licorice in the form of whole licorice root capsules or liquid extracts. Glycyrrhiza is the name of the chemical in licorice that has this pro-adrenal effect. It slows down the conversion of cortisol into other hormones, allowing levels to build up.

She advises to use Licorice one to two times a day right before the time of the drop shown on your test results and warns that if you take it after 3 p.m. your sleep may be affected. It should be used for short-term, for one to three months. Also advises you to reduce or stop your dose as you no longer need it, particularly if your appetite decreases or if you feel too speeded up. If you get heart palpitations or high blood pressure, stop at once (although she has rarely seen this reaction). Also cautions not to use licorice if you have high blood pressure or high estrogen levels because it can raise both.

I am taking it in fluid extract form. One dropper full in a small amount of warm water when I awake and another dropper full at lunch time. In his book, James L. Wilson recommends 10-15 drops of fluid extract 3-4 times a day.

I just started taking it yesterday and am taking it only 2 times a day. I decided to try it out of desperation because I can't see my doctor (DO) until Monday as she is out of town and the last few days I've been experiencing constant anxiety and insomnia, my body just won't shut down at night.

I took 2 doses on Friday and 2 today and my anxiety has gone down a few notches and I actually slept for 6 hours last night instead of the 2-3 hours I was getting all week.

I have mild adrenal fatigue and had been receiving acupuncture treatments for a couple of months to strengthen the adrenals and my energy levels improved. However, once I stopped the treatments my fatigue slowly returned over several weeks. I've had some stressful events in my life the past couple of weeks which I believe has caused my current condition. I think it's time for me to try Cortef and hope the doctor prescribes that for me on Monday.
