Addison's Disease Message Board

Addison's Disease Board Index

Hi everyone, how are you? I was diagnosed with addison's disease in August/September 2006 along with hypoparathyroidism. I was diagnosed with addisons after having one blood test come back with low cortisol levels, 80/50 blood pressure, extreme weight loss, and dizziness/nauseasness. I have been on 15 mg of cortef in the morning and 10 mg in the afternoon for a total of 25 mg a day. I am also on calcitriol and 2500 mg of a calcium supplement.

Lately I have just felt so terrible. I have been extrememly nauseas (sp?), with a terrible headache, very tired and lethargic, not much of an appetite, and I haven't been sleeping well.

I have a dr. appointment next week, I just don't know if I can wait that long. Part of me wants to get a second opionion to make sure that my diagnosis is correct.

I am wondering if I could be on too much medication or not enough, how do you decide? I also have low sodium and potassium levels, and have had high blood sugar in the past. I have been monitoring m blood sugar and lately its been fine.
I would call your doctor asap, and tell them that you think you need to be seen sooner. I know that potassium can really screw you up if it is not right, not sure about the other symptoms, you really need to call.
I hope you feel better soon.
Hi 2Jen!

I was diagnosed about the same time as you last year. It has been a challenge for me, but I am finally feeling as if I have a handle on all of this. I have a few questions about your symptoms. Are you perhaps coming down with a cold, or having some increase in stress in your life? When you describe the nausea and headache, it reminds me of how I feel just before something is about to hit me. That is how I know that I need to start increasing my dosage. I actually learned the hard way, after 3 months of off and on UTI's.

Also, you say that your electrolytes are off, sodium and potassium? Has the doctor mentioned Florinef to you? It is another medication which is often times essential to those of us with Addisons, as we tend to loose our sodium due to the lack of Aldosterone production. Try increasing your salt intake and see if that helps. I usually drink a few cups of hot water with chicken bullion cubes dissolved inside when I feel like I am getting sick. Feels sooooo very good, I can't even describe it!

My dosage is 20mg of Cortef in the am and 10mg around 2pm. I find that that timing works best for me.

I do hope you get to feeling better soon!
Blessings to you,
KMatthew, they you for your reply! I think I will call my dr. on Mon and try to get an earlier appointment. I actually think I almost had a crisis last week, I got really light headed and dizzy while driving and actually had to pull over for about 20 minutes to take more cortef.

Making, thank you so much for your reply. This year has been incredibly hard for me, its all been about learning what my body is telling me and it isn't always easy to figure out.

I don't feel like I am getting sick, however I am in the last few weeks of the semester which might be stressing me out more than I think. Whenever I do feel nausea or a headache I usually take 5mg of cortef just to be on the safe side. I am not sure if that is even the right thing to do, but I don't want to risk it. I don't think I am on too much medication only because I have not gained any weight, in fact I have lost a few pounds. I am only 4'11" and I got up to 92 pounds a few months ago and now I am consistently at 88.

My sodium and potassium are both low, to the point where I get little tremors in my muscles. I also have hypoparathyroidism, which means I have no calcium without supplements either. I was actually going to mention florinef to my dr. on my next visit, I am so tired of feeling lousy. Whenever I do feel nausea I eat high sodium things, in fact I have been trying to eat a high sodium diet for awhile now and that sometimes seems to help.

Thank you both for trying to help me figure this all out!
