Addison's Disease Message Board

Addison's Disease Board Index

For the last few years, I have been taking 17.5 mg. of Cortef per day, and I do fine on that dose. Lately, we are in the process of moving and because of the stress factor, my endo has upped the dose to 27.5. Between 20 and 30 is considered about right, I think, but if you aren't doing well on 20, you need more! Ask your doctor if you can up the dose by, say, 5 mg. a day and see if it helps. If so, you are on the right track.

I have hypo-adrenalism, hypothyroidism, as well as hypo almost every other hormone and vitamin deficiencies.

I take Cortef as follows: 15 mg when I wake up usually at 7 a.m., 10 mg at 11 a.m., and 5 mg at 1 pm. I have read that this kind of dosing (3 x daily) is more insync with the normal cortisol production. The dosing also needs to be adjusted according to a person's weight, stress, and illness/surgery/trauma stressors.

I've been on this now since July 2009. It can make me so hungry at times, that I have put on a lot of weight. I also notice it 3rd spaces fluids. (Instead of fluids staying in the blood stream, it leaks into the tissues giving my body a very puffy all over look, my jewelry leaves indents in my skin, as well as my back from laying in bed since I am bedridden).

Some doctors tell me that Cortef doesn't cause hunger (it does for me) or a lowering of the immune system (but I keep getting strange Urinary tract infections, like strept) so I just try to filter the misinformation they give me. I know my body very well. It doesn't' do this when I was not on Cortef.

Hugs and best wishes,
