Addison's Disease Message Board

Addison's Disease Board Index

WOW. I have many many of the same symptoms. I had PCOS before menopause and was really overweight. PCOS caused diabetes, because no one ever explained what it meant or treated it. And I know it stresses adrenal glands as well as an INTENSELY stressful career in design and advertising. So I truly think I may have just worn those poor glands OUT! BECAUSE I have done a COMPETE turnaround.

Used to be terribly hard to lose weight. In order to do so, I would have to eat 500-800 calories a day and exercise like a mad woman. Just eating 1200 calorie diet I would GAIN weight. I had excess facial and body hair... ALOT of it... toes, breasts, upper legs, lost of pubic and armpit hair, nearly a full beard (if I didn't wax it)... and my hair was thining out.. falling out in clumps and patches.

AND THEN.... I started LOSING weight. First intentionally but this time it was fast and easy. And when I stopped trying to lose weight, it continued. As much as a pound a day or every other day. I also developed EXTREME fatigue and was actually sent for narcolepsy testing because now I get these forced "sleep attacks" and fell asleep three blocks from home while driving in the middle of the afternoon after a full night's sleep! My appetite decreased... except for those crazy unexplainable RAVENOUS cravings for salt and sugary foods. All that excess body hair? GONE! And it disappeared FAST. And then, my thinning hair actually grew BACK full and thick like it was prior to PCOS. And the blood presuure and dizziness? Wow can I relate to that and how scary that is. I had a three-day episode of blood pressure levels constantly below 90 systolic and 50 diastolic and the lowest was 69/36. I could not stand up without fainting. I felt like my whole body was shutting down. My dr. blew it off and said "just don't stand up so fast." but she doesn't seem to get that it happens no matter how fast I stand and continues as long as I am up. Severe dizziness. Also developed flashing zig-zag colored lights that obscure my line of vision, but no associated migraine headache! And the vitamin D level at 10... even though I had a dark suntan and plenty of sun exposure. And the malabsorption of my meds (sometimes come out whole) and the diarhea. Now every time I eat, I feel full instantly. TOO full. Uncomfortable full. And it stays that way for quite some time. Blood sugar low. Blood pressure low. Extreme fatigue. No energy. Memory and cognitive issues. YIKES!!!! I did start on a new med which is extremely helpful, non-narcotic and non-addictive that promotes wakefulness and it has been a God-send. Modafinil (Provigil). Keep me alert, gives me some energy (without making me "speedy" or hyped) and ALSO greatly improves my cognitive and memory issues. But meds are just a band-aid! I would really like a diagnosis.

THey did cortisol, thyroid, DHEA, and other levels. Alll are "borderline low" except testostorone which is pretty much non-existent. Showed "abnormal", others shoed "low". THAT would explain the loss of the "unsightly" facial and body hair. Yes, I like that and yes, I like being a size 9 for the first time in 30 years!!!! (I am 55). But hey... the rest of it is crazy unbearable and fluctuates so much.

Dr. is sending me to an endo. But I don't hold out alot of hope, because so far, I've pretty much been labeled a hypochrondriac despite obvious symptoms. INCLUDING weird pigmentation on my skin (both dark and white spots/patches ... white spots won't tan.... weird). SO much is weird. My husband "loves" the new look. I do look alot of better with the weight loss, but so worried about my health.

Please keep me posted on your results and hopefully FAST diagnosis so you can get the treatment you need to feel NORMAL again. I will add you to my prayers!!! And I will let you know if I find out anything more that will be helpful to you as well.

Take care!
