wdmoor I had that smell too, after I had my surgery. The ENT said everything was great too. My allergist believed it was sinus gunk that wasn't cleaned out that was finally able to drain. He gave me some antibiotics, which made the ENT very upset, who said it wasn't infected and would drain on its own. But I personally side with my allergist. This stuff was nasty green and brown. (Sorry if too graphic) But anyway once it all was out of me, I felt better than I had in years.
Hello wdmoor. Glad to hear you are recovering well. It takes time, but is well worth it. 1-1/2 years ago, I had surgery for a deviated septum, had my turbinates in left nostril shaved down, and had packing. I apologize if this post is too graphic for some. Packing was very weird feeling and had two large tubes (one each side and a stitch on each side to keep them from coming out) holding nostrils and sinuses open. Odor was like something rotting and ENT had to suction and use extraction tools at least once per week and was amazed at the amount, but very pleased at how fast I healed.

For odor, I was on antibiotics for several weeks and saline only got stuck inside sinuses, hence I stopped that and used steamy showers. Some days I took four five-minute steamy showers instead of saline rinse. I believe the odor was strongest immediately after a shower, but decreased quickly as my sinuses dried, but too dry made them draw up or tighten which was uncomfortable. I was very worried that other people could smell the odor as well, because it was so strong, but they could not smell it.

Just know that God equipped you to endure the recovery and after you are all healed, you will look back at all you have been through and will feel much better about it and will be proud of what you have accomplished. Packing was like a Family-sized tea bag in each sinus. Mother-in-law drove me to have packing and tubes removed and was amazed and grossed out at the same time.

I agree with your allergist for the antibiotics. My allergist stepped in and prescribed antibiotics when ENT was out of town for a week and odor was taking my appetite away and I avoided people. I was able to expel any excessive scabs and thick discharge after a steamy shower would moisten everything by simply breathing in through my nose. Just watch the blowing and sneezing as directed. My ENT had to do some extractions of dried drainage that was too large to come out on its own.
