My 8 1/2 month old son was at ER yesterday for severe hives that had his mouth swollen. This morning his allergist prescribed an epi-pen jr and RAST testing on for the most common allergens and for orange. He plans a skin scratch test for sweet potatoes in a few weeks.

Yesterday was not the first time he had oranges but was the first time he had more than just a tiny taste. He had been sippign at his cup a few hours off and on before I noticed hives on his back, then shortly after on his belly and chest. I was on the phone with his allergist when I noticed his face was swelling as well and immediately took him to the ER. They gave him decadron.

The same thing happened although not nearly as severe with mango two weeks ago. He had a few bites for a late breakfast but did not have hives until mid-afternoon.

A few days before Christmas he had sweet potatoes for the first time and within 15 minutes was covered in hives. Not severe enough to warrant a trip to the ER but enough to keep a constant eye on him until they were clearing.

The sweet potatoes I have little doubt as to being the cause of the first episode, but for the other two times, is it likely to have been the new foods taking that long to show a reaction? His allergist thinks it may just be chronic hives since it's not an instant reaction. I really like the guy my son sees, I'm just looking for anyone else's thoughts or to hear from someone with a similar experience.

He has always had moderate eczema that we havet o stay on top of. I have allergies myself to many medications, none to food except migraine triggers. His father has none. Our other child has "seasonal" allergies. He tested positive to oats several months ago as well via skin scratch testing.
