No, you are not alone in fragrance allergies. For a long time I've been unable to use any scented products on myself, due to rashes. Since developing asthma, I've found that some fragrances can trigger me pretty badly.

When it is necessary for me to mention it to someone, I try to be clear, but polite and calm. "I'm sorry, it's not that I don't like you, but you're wearing a fragrance or scented product I'm allergic to, so I'm going to sit on the other side of the table while we talk."

With a neighbor, I'm not sure how to handle it. Definitely the first step is a polite conversation with the tenant in question. Ironically, the calmer and less hysterical you are, the more likely people are to believe that you really have a problem, and most rational people do not want to make their neighbors sick! Step 2 is landlord.
Thanks for the advice, Jane. The neighbour uses a LOT of fragrance, not to mention smoking the odd joint. I'm very sensitive to most fragrances and smoke. Over the Christmas holidays he seemed to have gone through a major pot-smoking bender (if you can call it that), combined with incense. Even though I dreaded it, I eventually knocked on his door. I was actually hyperventilating a bit at the time because of the smoke, but I politely told him that all the smoke was filling my apartment and it was making it difficult to breathe. He immediately apologized and said he would stop. Which he did, for a period of time.

But gradually, he started doing it a few times a week, and it bothered me every time. So I asked my landlord to get involved. Now I am at the point of dealing with the tenant after the landlord said to cut out the burning incense and smoking. The tenant seems to be willing to work it out, unfortunately his apartment REEKS of fragrance of all sorts, and every time the heat comes on, his fragrance is pumped into my apt and it drives me insane with itchiness and makes it harder to breathe.

He swears he is not burning any incense or smoking in the house any longer. But my apartment REEKS every time the heat comes on, I hate it. I really really don't want to move, I just moved here a few months ago and I like it. I spent three years living in a hellish building before this with incredibly noisy neighbours.

When I talked to the tenant yesterday and told him I am still smelling it and getting itchy, he mentioned he started using patchouli essential oil. I smelled it, I don't like it, but I don't know if that's it. I am going to go to the natural store tomorrow and check out the patchouli oil and ask the clerk if people can be allergic to it. I sort of seem to remember that I had a problem with patchouli in shampoo years ago, but I'm not totally sure.

The itching is driving me nuts, and I wake up coughing for about an hour. I coughed so much this morning that I threw up a bit in the shower (sorry if that's too much info!). It was pretty gross.
