Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Message Board

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Board Index

Here's the story: I'm a 22 year old male. Last November I had a severe bout of anxiety and depression following a very stressful incident. It was so bad that I would feel tense in my back and felt panic for no reason whatsoever.

However the anxious feelings seemed to go away when I started worrying about other things. About a month ago, I was accidentally hit in my spine at work. That night when I went to sleep, I kept popping back up and felt a radiating pressure and pain in the middle of my back. For the next few weeks I had bouts of dizziness, back pain, muscle pains, and arthritic pains, and odd feelings in my hands. I could not sleep on my side because my back hurt, and I stopped lifting things for about the whole month until recently. After taking a lot of advil and muscle cream, those pains subdued, but I still felt funny. I also started to have a twitching in my left elbow, and sometimes some aching pain in my left arm. About a week later, the twitching went from my elbow to everywhere, and I wass twitching like crazy. About 3 weeks ag, I woke up and my right thigh felt weak, like it was over worked, especially in the groin area, though I haven't felt anything like that in my leg since that day. I then began to read on the internet about muscle twitching and was worried that I had CJD because I had constant twitching and dizziness. Eventually the dizziness went away and then I read about ALS, and now I'm terrified that I have it. About a couple weeks after the twitching first started, my upper arms started to feel tense most of the time, some days worse than others. I lifted weights last night and afterwords my right arm felt so tense that I felt that if I continued to use it, I couldn't move my right arm. Though it's typical to feel like that after lifting heavy weights, and it's been about 2 1/2 months since the last time I lifted, but when you think ALS has something to do with it, it's a bit scarey. The muscle tension in my upper arms is worse in the morning. The twitching is more mild than it was 2 weeks ago...mostly in my legs, calfs, abdomen, and occasionally in the arms and back. I haven't lost any strength, and have put on muscle. The muscles in my arms seem to feel better after using them more, but they get sore and tense, and they still feel weird when I get up in the morning. I usually never feel rested and wake up too early. I have a coughy, cold, feeling in my chest, and an occasionally heavy breath where I can sometimes feel phlegm, and a horse voice that clears up when I clear my throat of phlegm, making me think I have a change in voice or speaking problems. I've been outside in the cold a lot and have been swallowing phlegm in buckets. Sometimes my breath feels heavier when I lay down. A few days ago, I was convinced that I was having breathing problems, but I don't feel like it now and I seem to be breathing fine. I'm afraid to see a doctor, because I know he'll just add the weakness to the twitching and come up with ALS. I can't concentrate on anything like my schoolwork because I'm so sure I have the disease.

I apologize for the length of this post, but I'm very scared
