Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Board Index

I know this will sound odd but I just have a few questions about ALS...

My 47 year old mother is convinced she has ALS. My grandfather died of ALS in June 2001. My mother claims she started feeling the symptoms of the disease before he died. So, it has been 3 years and she is still feeling the same symptoms. Basically, her situation has not really detiorated at all in 3 years.

The wrench is, she is a severe alcoholic. I did research on a disease called Wernicke-Korsakoff and many of the symptoms were the same. She holds all of the symptoms of this disease and it is much more likely that she has this considering her extreme drinking. It is basically brain damage from lack of nutrition since alcohol blocks thiamine from being absorbed. She says her biggest symptom of ALS is that she has trouble climbing stairs and she has muscle twitches at night. These are both symptoms of alcohol related illness as well though.

I was just curious if it is possible to hold symptoms of ALS for 3 years with no progression. My grandfather progressed rapidly and had died about 3 years after his diagnosis. She has a doctors appointment next week but I doubt if she was told she had an alcohol related illness she would admit it.

I guess it doesn't really matter. I doubt my mother will stop drinking and Wernicke-Korsakoff eventually kills you as well. I guess my concern is, if it IS ALS then that means it is familial. I have 2 children and the thought of them suffering with that kills me.

I hope this post made sense and any insight you can give me would be great. Thank you.
