I have reading a lot about ALS lately - how soon do symptoms start? This past week, I have been experiencing numbness and tingling that started in both my feet and both my hands, which has now transmitted to the entire left side of my body. Is numbness and tingling symptoms of ALS? From my shoulder to my hand on my left side, my entire muscles seem tight and won't seem to relax. I also noticed that for a second time I woke up with my fists clenched.
If I take a few aspirin, the symptoms lessen but do not go away completely. I feel tired and weak, and unsteady on my feet. I have noticed I have been dropping things, and twitches in different part of my body. They do not hurt either.
Any suggestions would be great. I have never been sick other than a bladder infection a month after I delivered my first baby.

My husband's first symptoms were numbness and tingling in his left hand. We thought he had Carpal Tunnel syndrome. This gradually became worse and he would experience cramping also. He also started losing strength in his hand. Have you noticed any weakness? Limb onset ALS usually presents itself on one side of the body first. Your symptoms sound more symmetrical, so that is a good sign.

I would make an appointment with your doctor to get a professional opinion.

My husband's symptoms began with numbness, tingling, and cramping in his left hand. We originally thought he had Carpal Tunnel syndrome. His left hand (and arm) has progressively become more and more weak and shown signs of atrophy. Unfortunately, he was indeed diagnosed with ALS this July.

However, my husband's symptoms are worse on one side of his body. ALS tends to present itself asymmetrically. It tends to present on one side of the body first.

See a doctor, that will be the best way to find out what you have. Please keep us posted.

I am suffering from numbness and tingling occasionally in my legs down near my ankles. I also have muscle cramps in my left thigh on a daily basis. I have muscle twitches that occur all over my body and "vibrations" all over my body. Right now my tongue is a little numb. I have a lot of body aches especially in my legs. I have noticed my left hand has become weaker and I actually droped my knife twice last night.

I am being tested for MS right now. I have been told by several neuros and family doctors that many doctors are diagnosing Fibro now so they don't have to continue testing. They are getting pressure from insurance companies to limit testing and at times they are just too lazy to continue searching for answers. Many of the people I know with MS began with a Fibro diagnosis, but pursued with doctors until all the tests were done. And received their MS diagnosis many years later, which is a shame. The earlier you get treatment for MS the better.

Lesions for MS do not always appear on the brain or spine in the beginning so it is very easy for a doctor to say you are fine it must be Fibro. My first neuro did that to me. I knew she was full of crap and went on to another much better neuro.

I am not sure of all the symptoms of ALS but make sure you explore other problems before jumping to conclusions. I thought ALS progressed rather rapidly since the life expectancy is only 5 yrs. Hmmm...I think I need to research that more.
