Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Message Board

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Board Index

Ok I have had a clinical exam done by very skilled neurologist, no signs of ALS. Went to ER with problems of swallowing and neck weakness, saw another Neurologist, she said no signs of ALS. 5 days later got another check up by same neurologist and then he ran EMG and Nerve Conduction Study on me. Everything came out normal he said. Is there still a possibility that i have ALS? I still have some weakness in my neck and in my jaw along with a lot of weakness in my left shoulder and arm. Seems to be all on my left side so far. I have been ruled out of MS and CK levels ar below normal at 80 so the doc said that this is another indicator of not having muscles disorder cause it was belowe normal. How am i supposed to understand neck weakness, and swallowing weakness along with left shoulder and arm weakness? Could this be a disc in neck causing problems? Any ideas would be of great help, THANK YOU?
Your answer is "No". What you think is weakness and what the EMG shows as weakness are 2 totally different things! They can check the nerves to see if in fact you have nerve deterioration and muscle problems, and if they say "no", then you can be pretty sure you don't have a serious problem.

What sort of test did they do for your swallowing / throat? Did they do EMG on your arm, leg, neck??? Just interested. I have had problems swallowing for the past 3-4 weeks, so I was just curious if in fact they have a test to check throat / neck.
They tested:
Right arm- Deltoid, bicep, forarm, hand
Left arm- Deltoid, bicep, forarm, hand
Left back and shouldler- Trap right next to neck, Scapula, Rhomboidus Major, and another i dont know which one
Left leg- Thigh muscle, calf muscle

They also did nerve conduction study on both left arm and right arm, both were normal, actually was in better condition on left arm then on right he said (thats where weakness is).

Not sure if i am in the safe zone yet thoughi guess follow up exam will tell me that in 4 weeks but he said he is more then 99% sure i do not have ALS.
