Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Message Board

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Board Index

I am a 23 year old female and I'll admit, a bit of a hypochondriac. I've had a few symptoms over the past months that disturb me and worry that it's possible they are ALS. About 7 months ago I began experiencing tingling and numbness in my right foot which occasionally spread up my lower leg (never above the knee). I had been doing a considerable amount of walking (5+ miles a day) in flip-flops on cement and was told a shoe change was in order. I started wearing tennis shoes and while the symptoms have definitely lessened, they have never completely disappeared. They are worse when walking, or after wearing shoes with little support.

About 3 weeks ago, the tip of my ring finger became numb. There has been some slight tingling in it as well. I notice it when typing, and find that the numbness varies in severity.

I know numbness and tingling are not normally signs of ALS - what causes me the most concern is that my right foot seems slightly weaker than my left - it drags/stumbles a bit more (though altogether I walk normally)....I am pretty sure that one of my legs is longer than the other (I used to run and only ever got shin splints in one leg) - could that be the cause of this occasional dragging?

I am otherwise healthy - just a big worrier. I would love thoughts/ideas as to what could be causing these symptoms and if there is any real reason to worry about ALS. Thank you.
