Is this ALS/MND?
Jun 21, 2012
I am a 19 year old female. Around August/September last year I suddenly got joint pain in my knee when bending down. This soon calmed down and although it was still there very mildly sometimes it wasn't effecting me. At christmas time the pain came back and could also be felt in my ankle and wrist when they were bent/exerted. This too calmed down. To this present day I still have the pain in my wrist, but my knee is very rarely hurts and my ankle not at all. I had tests for arthiritis, autoimmune disease etc., no conclusion. A couple of months ago, I developed a sharp localised pain to the right of my chest that occuted when I breathed deeply or moved. This is now only present a couple ousclesf times a week. I can also feel it sometimes if I sort push my chest in and breath. I was tedted for pulmonary embolism etc., no conclusion except for muscle/ chedt wall pain that would go on its own. I have also recently noticed a very random right hand tremor, very random shooting back pain and sometimes pain when swalloing and slight feeling of phlegm. I also pull muscles with the smallest of activities, edpecially in my right arm. However, they do heal. Does this sound like ALS/MND? Would my symptoms effectively'come and go' lime this and also appear to get better sometimes, or would they just progress?
This does not sound like ALS. You said your arthritis tests were inconclusive. Were any of them abnormal or borderline? The migrating joint pain, since it has persisted for almost a year, should be rechecked. I wonder if the chest pain is pleurisy-sure sounds like it. Sometimes in autoimmune disorders, the symptoms precede the lab confirmation of a disorder by months to years, so anyone with ongoing symptoms should get their blood work and arthritis tests retested at least once a year, and now wouldn't be too soon. I would get an arthritis panel done which includes tests for rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, and be sure to get an ASO titer done (strept antibodies) since you periodically have a sore throat. There is no good test for pleurisy as it often does not show up on Xray or physical exam. If it does, you're in luck, but it is usually a diagnosis based on symtpoms. I would review the symptoms of lupus on the Lupus Foundation of America website to see if you have any others. I would see a rheumatologist for testing, as the testing will be more thorough than what a PCP usually does. The only symptom you mention that seems to not fit particularly is the hand tremor.
