Lady I had a similar experience with Dad and the facility. He went down two flights of steps with his bad knees and out a back door with a broken alarm. He was spotted by an alert family member of another resident walking down a busy street at 6 am with it 13 F with no coat on. The family member called the police who picked him up and brought him back to the facility. Dad was NOT happy and did not cooperate but the police were very understanding.

My angst came in the second and third time he went out that same door. I could understand it being broken but once a resident escapes like that, you would think they would fix it. NO they didn't. Even after the third escape I found the door malfunctioning a week later. Mom was escaping out the front door while Dad was going out the back so we were told they had to move to a locked unit. I was already looking for a place so it was no surprise and it was what Mom and Dad needed.

THe best words of advice are... you never know when they are going to wander off that first time. Dad did it on a freezing February morning. Mom did it on a warm March afternoon. My grandmother got up in the middle of the night and disappeared. You have to be ready BEFORE they disappear!!

Love, deb
