Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia Message Board

Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia Board Index

Inboston... it is different for every patient. My Dad with Vascular dementia had 13 years between diagnosis and his passing. My Mom has been diagnosed for over 5 years and still going. My grandmother lasted for 3 years after her diagnosis. My good friend's mother lasted just 2 years. Yet I had a great aunt that was 9 years between diagnosis and passing.

It depends on how far into the disease your patient was when diagnosed and what other medical problem may be present. A rule of thumb is that they usually last half their normal life expectancy. You can find online life expectancy calculators that will give you that number.... and then you can take half as a general rule of thumb. But nothing in this disease is every easy to determine :)

Love, Deb
