Ferritin measures your stored iron reserves in the liver. It can be low even if your hemoglobin and hematocrit are in the normal range. Since you have a history of anemia and were only treated for 2 months before, it would be reasonable to supplement your iron intake, especially since your periods are heavy and frequent. You may need to take iron as long as you are bleeding. When anemic, iron supplements are usually given for 6 months, 3 to correct the deficiency and 3 more to replenish the liver stores. That is when the cause of the anemia is corrected (like bleeding). You do seem to have some perimenopausal symptoms, and once you stop your periods, the anemia may no longer be an issue.
