Iron Infusion
Sep 26, 2016
Hi All,

I'm here to share with you how my first iron infusion experience went as I also used Google to grab some information on how the procedure would be and what side effects I could have.
I was referred to an iron infusion from a specialist after suffering from chronic shoulder musculoskeletal problems for over 2 years. Been to many different types of treatments in the last 2 years such as dry needling, massage therapy, physiotherapy and hardly had relief for longer than a week. My iron level has always been low but in the last 3 years it has dropped quite significantly: it has been between 8.0 to 11.0. I have been feeling overly tired when doing easy activities like vacuuming, walking, also a lack of concentration. I have very heavy periods and this could be the cause of low iron level. My specialist had to give me a prescription for 2x Ferrinject 500ml which I paid a total of AUD$39 with Medicare card.
I had my first iron infusion at Clinipath, in Perth, 4 days ago and paid $175 for the procedure plus a consultation with a Dr Pathologist, who comes in to ask you a few questions in regards to possible reasons for your iron level to be low and inform you of possible side affects and activities you should avoid for the next 5 days (gym, vacuuming, running, yoga, pilates...). The procedure took about 30 min with no pain, I only felt thirsty straight after it started. However, my arm got quite heavy once the procedure had finished which was a little annoying and painful to drive.
For the rest of the day, I had a horrible taste in my mouth which made me feel like drinking juice all the time. I chose orange juice, as I know that it helps iron absorption. I was also feeling quite energetic and that my brain was working quicker than usual. However, the next day I woke up feeling fatigued and slept for more than 11 hours which is so not normal for me. Anything I was getting up for would make me feel overly exhausted such as washing dishes, cooking or even walking from the sofa to the toilet. I spent all day on the sofa. On the second day, I decided on taking the dog for a short walk (30 min) and came back home feeling like I was going to faint. The end of the day, my leg muscles were a little bit sore and I had a cold like feeling with headache and all body was a bit sore. I was told that we can only take paracetamol if any side effect occurs but I decided on not taking anything as the symptoms were not too bad. On the third day, I was still feeling fatigued and had cold like feelings too. I had to grab a chair to finish my cooking that took around 15 min. I decided on spending another day on the sofa. Today is the 4th day and I am at work. I spend most of the time in front of the pc screen so I thought I could manage. However, I still have the annoying cold like feeling and I feel so tired that even walking from my desk to the toilet makes me feel breathless.
I will keep you guys updated on how I will be feeling on the next days. I look forward to starting to feel the benefits of the iron infusion though :)
Please note that the side effects I am getting may not be the same for everyone.
Cheers guys
