When you say vitamins do not agree with you much, what do you mean? What happens when you take a multivitamin?

It's hard to say how long it will take for your iron levels to become normal. Some people on this board have been taking iron for years, and only see their iron rise by 0.1 points. My sister gets regular iron infusions, and her iron rises but always drops down again. A lot of factors affect how iron is handled in the body. That's why I suggest trying more than just iron alone. My iron only finally went up when I started taking 25,000IU retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) a day, based on a study done. And in two months my ferritin rose from 20 to 35.

Even though my ferritin is now at 45, my hemoglobin is still low, as is my MCHC. Along with some other symptoms, I was diagnosed with a B6 deficiency. It turns out the allergy medication I've been taking for years depletes B6. And I was not absorbing much from the b-complex tablet I was taking. So now I stopped the Flonase, and I take liquid or sublingual vitamins, preferably co-enzymated. If I take a tablet, I chew it up (yuck). There is also a pure powdered vitamin from "Bulk Supplements", which doesn't have any fillers or binders, which is nice if the fillers in tablets disagree with you.

My anemia is called pyridoxine responsive hypochromic anemia. Taking B6 has been quite a rollercoaster, as it effects hormones, sleep, and the thyroid! I had to stop my thyroid meds, because the B6 raised my thyroid, practically making me hyper. Even my hair, which had been thinning and I figured it was just age, is getting thick and shiny again. I also had pretty bad dandruff, which is clearing up.

I have to say that it's been interesting learning how many different nutrients you need to make proper red blood cells. So it's just a good idea to take all of them together, just in case, and not take only iron.
