I just began an 8-dose-over-4-week IV infusion of "sodium ferric gluconate complex" to treat anemia, which is likely a result of a roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery, which I had in 2008. My blood levels have been in the lower end of the normal range since the surgery, but never actually dipped into the anemic range until this year.

I had my first infusion 5 days ago. I left the hospital feeling spectacular (probably just loving the sugar in my blood). I don't think I had any side effects for at least 2 days, but then I started getting a congested feeling in one of my ear canals. Thought I was probably getting a cold. A little less than 48 hours ago (three days after the IV treatment), I felt a little tickle in my throat, which over the course of about 24 hours, turned into what felt like the onset of a very bad cold. I woke up this morning with my head very congested and my throat feeling like I had probably been coughing all night. Very surprising to me since I rarely get a cold (perhaps once a year) and they tend to come and go very quickly without a lot of fanfare.

Two questions:
1. Is it possible that these symptoms are a result of the iron infusion? or has too much time elapsed since the infusion for these to be related?
2. If so, should I expect similar side effects from future iron infusions? This worries me a little because my remaining infusions are scheduled to occur over only 3 weeks in December (I'm even scheduled to get 3 doses one week).

I know this is probably just a cold (especially since the symptoms arose during a period when so many people travel around the US). But I'm a curious man and can't help but look for zebras even when the plains are scattered with horses.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
