Freshener infusion
Jan 29, 2017
I have chronic anemia with no cause. Two years ago went to ER with an iron level of 1 and a blood count of 5. Lots of symptoms that seemed obvious after. I had been going to my primary care for some, an ENT for the pulsative tinnitus, a nutritionist for feeling so tired, etc. not one of them ever said go for blood work. I finally called and asked my PCP to do blood tests, knowing something was very wrong. Spent six days in the hospital having tests run and got 2 pints of blood. Tried all kinds of iron supplements and iron went up as high as 43. Hematologist wanted it over 100! How? Went to PC every 3 months. Hemoglobin was staying in normal range even though iron was still hanging in mid 20's. Then, suddenly, pulsative tinnitus was back! Went and had blood work done and sure enough iron was down to 8, blood count was 8.2. Back to hematologist. Two days later had first infusion of Feraheme, the new stuff. Used mostly with people with kidney problems, but I think my asthma might have won the insurance company over. Woke up nauseaus first night, took it easy the next day. Woke up this morning with a pretty uncomfortable lower back ache. I was in an accident almost ten years ago and broke 7 bones, had a head injury, and a huge wound in my thigh, so I no longer pay much attention to pain, otherwise I would never get out of bed. So is back pain a side effect of the infusion or something unrelated? I am a widow (same accident) live alone, and need to work. Starting to feel like there is no good answer to this anemia mess. A year ago the hematologist looked through my records again and said, " I just don't know what to do with you. Stay on the prescription iron until your count goes over 100. Good luck." Awe inspiring. Perscription iron was miserable to live with. I was actually looking forward to starting infusions, now I am not so sure. I have to go back later this week for round 2. Help!
