Healthy Serum Iron Levels

Healthy or normal serum iron values depend on your gender. Normal serum levels for men range from 76 to 198 micrograms of iron per deciliter. Normal levels for women are a little lower and range from 26 to 170 micrograms of iron per deciliter. Blood tests used to examine iron levels are usually taken in the morning because that’s when levels tend to be highest. However, results can vary significantly between laboratories depending on how they handle the blood sample and the methods used to measure iron. A normal laboratory result may actually indicate a deficiency in some people but a perfectly healthy level in others. For example, some women with 40 micrograms of iron per deciliter of serum may be healthy, whereas others may need higher levels to feel good and keep symptoms at bay.

Normal Serum Iron Test Results

Serum iron is measured in micrograms of iron per deciliter of blood (mcg/dL). The following are considered normal ranges for a serum iron test:

iron: 60 to 170 mcg/dL
transferrin saturation: 25 percent to 35 percent
Total iron binding capacity (TIBC): 240 to 450 mcg/dL

Transferrin is a protein in the blood that transports iron throughout your body. Examining how much iron is in the transferrin proteins can tell your doctor if you have too much or too little iron in your blood.

TIBC measures how well the transferrin proteins are transporting iron around your body.
