My mother is 94. She has had three hemoglobin counts in the 6 + range and one was 5.9. the Doctor's called me immediately and said she needed a transfusion...she refused and opted to take iron three times a day. The doctor said it would takes months to bring the count back up...It took mother one month to bring it up to 10 level and At the end of two months it was up to 11.7. Doctor wanted her to have a colonoscopy , but we just did not want her to go through that prep and procedure at this age...it would set her back...We believe the blood loss is coming from hemorrhoids.

That is great that it came up so fast. There are more indicators for anemia than just the hemeglobin. One can be severely anemic and the hemeglobin can be just out of range. The MCV, MCHC and the Hematocrit combined with the hemeglobin measures are the most conclusive indicators of anemia.
