I was diagnosed with Thalasemia (Moderate) when I was 5 years old. I inherited the gene from my father who also has the moderate version of this anemia. Thalasemia major is very serious and requires transfusions. Moderate is not as sever but can be very difficult to deal with. It can be exhausting if you do not eat well and get enough sleep. Suprisingly enough, exercising helps (if you can find the energy to start the activity) Taking iron or iron enriched vitamins prove useless and can actually cause more harm to some of your internal organs. You just learn to live with feeling and looking tired all the time! My advice to anyone who has Thalasemia is to eat well balanced meals and try to stay rested (and ALWAYS warn your new doctor that you have this cuz they will still freak out when they get your blood tests back!)
