Ready to Cry
Aug 13, 2003
I've had problems with anemia for years now. It first started about 10 yrs ago after I had been on aspirin therapy for a blood clot. At that time they found an ulcer so I had a blood transfusion and was all set.
I've been mildly anemic off and on over the years but now it is at it's lowest since the transfusion. My hemoglobin is at 7.5. It wasn't quite so low a few months ago when I had my tests for occult bleeding, I had both a colonoscopy and an upper GI. No bleeding found. My doctor said it must be from the rectal bleeding I get from my Irritable Bowel Syndrome constipation.
I have been out of work for over 2 months now and haven't had any bleeding but my iron level still dropped. I haven't been taking iron pills because they cause my IBS to act up, hence more rectal bleeding. It's a catch-22 situation.
Today my doctor's office called and they want me to go see a hematologist at the cancer center. The only appt. they could give me was for Aug. 25th. My insurance runs out the 28th and I can't afford any medical after that.
I called the office back to tell the nurse that it would be a few weeks and very close to my insurance end but she was very unsympathetic. She said the doctor said that a blood transfusion wouldn't be the right solution but iron transfusions are over a 6 week period so that won't work either.
I am so frustrated! In my research it seems that I am at a very critical level, just above life threatening. I don't feel my doctor is taking this serious enough. I don't know what to do next.
I guess I'm just mostly venting my frustration but if anyone has any advice I could sure use it. Thanx
