I was diagnosed with anemia last week after a blood test revealed my ferritin level was 8. I wondered if anyone knew how long I would have been anemic for it to have reached this level. My hair has been falling out for about 4 years now and I have been feeling dizzy/lightheaded for a long while too, could I have been anemic all this time?

Thanks

The ferritin level is the measure of stored iron. It is not an indicator of the available iron that you are utilizing daily from food. There is no way to tell you what you want to know. All I can say is that it takes 120 days from the beginning of the creation of red blood cells to the time they are used and destroyed by the spleen to be remanufactured. So, anything along the way could interfere with the process. The symptoms you describe could be associated with thyroid condition or other autoimmune disorders as well as dehydration.
