"Yes, I am a member of the "Sleepers' Club" too!!

I have Hypothyroidism and Vitamin B12 deficiency. I take 50 mcg Levothyroxine daily and have Vitamin B12 injections once every 8 weeks.

Regarding "Sleeping way too much" -

Firstly, it depends on what length of time you have noticed this problem; as if it has been going on for some weeks then it can almost definetly me attributed to a medical problem, whether diagnosed and/or undiagnosed.

Secondly, it is important to have at least eight hours sleep, and if possible, two of those eight hours of sleep should be taken before midnight, as sleep taken before midnight is more benefical to the body and well being of the person. If I am finding that I want to sleep during the day, I try my best not to go to sleep, as otherwise if I do sleep during the day then the above ideal sleeping pattern is not met, which means that one could be awake when one should be asleep, namely during the night, and it can take some time to restore anywhere near ideal sleeping patterns; in this case I mean in terms of when sleeping and not regarding how long one is sleeping. In my case just recently over some weeks I have slept from 5 p.m. until the following morning, not waking up until anywhere between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Totals of between 13 and 15 hours sleep; and despite having slept so long I do not feel any real benefit for it, still feeling totally physically and mentally exhausted. Therefore, since June of this year I have not managed to achieve much during the day in terms of normal routine household tasks and written everyday paperwork etc...

In my case this is not a new health problem, as I have had this problem off and on since at least the early 1980's. The worst thing about it is that I am always being surrounded by unfinished tasks, and yet during a 'good spell' I can start to get on top of those unfinished tasks, before it starts all over again where new unfinished tasks are added onto old previous unfinished tasks, so in turn a vicious cycle. Therefore, I can actually judge my state of health by the amount of unfinished tasks, and I am a positive thinker and, as such, do not sit around feeling sorry for myself.

Thirdly, possible causes:-

1. Medications being taken, including side effects and/or not at the correct doseage etc..

2. Hormonal and/or chemical imbalances within the body.

3. Poor sluggish blood circulation within the body, which affects the brain area.

4. Lack of oxygen within the blood, which again in turn noticeably affects the brain area.

In the case of above items three and four I am wondering if that is why I have a significant feeling of pressure (without pain) at the back of my head, where sometimes lying down alleviates it and getting up again brings it back, whereas at other times I fall straight to sleep. This is a problem I have had off and on for many years now.

5. Hypoglycaemia, which is an abnormally low concentration of glucose in the blood. Therefore, it is better if one tries to eat little and often to maintain good glucose levels, as if one's glucose levels drop that makes one sleepy.

6. Anaemia - There are many forms/types of anaemia, and not just iron deficiency, so you need to research into them. I have to take vitamin B12 injections because of lack of the intrinsic factor in the stomach, which means that my stomach cannot absorb vitamin B12 by food and by taking medicinal supplements, so without those injections I would get pernicious anaemia, which in turn can lead to serious health problems. This lack of the intrinsic factor is also linked to my thyroid disorder.
Also if you are a woman and lose a lot of blood during your monthly menstrual
cycles this can also lead to iron deficiency, and if left untreated can lead to anaemia.
Note:- You can also have more than one type of anaemia at the same time.

7. A recognised sleeping disorder, which is a separate health problem, and can be directly and/or indirectly linked to other diagnosed health problems, and yet on the other hand there may be no connection at all to other existing health problems. I think it is best to look at and deal with other possible causes before thinking one has a sleeping disorder.

8. Stress and emotional distress, resulting in nervous and physical exhaution.
A death in the family, divorce, moving house, and serious debt problems are some of the highest stress factors. Another significant stress factor is immediate family, relatives and friends not being sympathetic to your health problems. Not always easy I know, but it is best to try to avoid stressful situations.

9. Doctors making light of your health problems, and therefore in turn you are not getting all the medical assistance that you need, which naturally leads to unresolved significant health problems. This can also be linked to the above eighth item, as highly stressful in itself, not to mention the constant repetition not only to doctors and other official outside bodies, but also to immediate family, relatives and friends too etc...

Therefore, to finish this I think the first step of action is try not to sleep during the day if possible. I do this by making myself keep awake by half an hour longer each day. For example:-

Monday, go to sleep at 5.00 a.m.
Tuesday, go to sleep at 5.30 a.m.
Wednesday, go to sleep at 6.00 a.m.
Thursday, go to sleep at 6.30 a.m.
Friday, go to sleep at 7.00 a.m.
Saturday, go to sleep at 7.30 a.m.
Sunday, go to sleep at 8.00 a.m., and so on....

Also try sitting out in the fresh air and/or taking a walk; even if it is only a short walk around your garden for example.
Walking no matter how slowly is a good form of simple exercise, even if you feel that is the last thing you want to do. Walking helps circulation within the body of both blood and oxygen. Also do not forget to have your windows open to allow fresh air into your house if you do not have air conditioning.
