There is plenty of risk associated with just "living with" anemia. First of all, it saps your energy. If you are young, it may not be so noticeable. As you get older, you will want as much energy as you can get. Severe anemia can make your hair fall out and make your fingernails look weird.

Bottom line: you want to get to the bottom of what is CAUSING your anemia and correct it. You could have bleeding in your stomach, which can be very serious and dangerous. If that is the cause you will want to know so you can avoid certain medications and to fix the bleeding ASAP. It could be caused by a heavy monthly menstrual period if you are female which could indicate a serious health problem such as endometriosis. It could be caused by a malabsorption problem in your small intestine, which means that certain foods can make you very sick and are to be avoided. Or the malabsorption problem could be caused by a disease, like celiac or sprue. And yes, here is where an anxiety diagnosis could also be true: if that anxiety is causing gastric disturbances like chronic diarrhea.

So do take your diagnosis seriously. Forgive your doctors in the past. The thing is, anemia is a secondary condition to many illnesses so doctors are apparently quite familiar with it. So give your current doctors a chance and let them help you. If you don't like your doctors, keep looking. You really have to be a pit bull dog about your own care these days and insist on being listened to.

I haven't had it very long myself, and that's why I came to this board. My doctor still does not know what is the cause of mine yet, but that's because I just got over a recent infection and she wanted a to wait a month before doing more tests. In the meantime, I am reading as much as I can about anemia and I am ready to participate fully in my own care with lots of questions of my own when I see her again.

Good luck to both of us!
