Most of the clinical nutrition and sport medicince literature makrs anythin below 20 ferritn as deficiency, a bit higher than the hematologiy lit, which averages between 12-15. If your hemoglobin if fine, you are just deficicent, not anemic. But, in any event, 50 seem to be a good number to be at according to some studies done of fatigue and exercise intolerance.

Not every doc is the same, it all depends on the practice and how dr are "ordered" to save resources. So, I would just take the tests and not worry too much. I think it is better to cover all bases than to have to fight for treatment, or not even know what tests the dr should have been running:)
