Thanks for helping as this is driving me crazy so I am trying to research as much as possible.

I had the colonscopy and upper endoscopy done to anemia and, subsequently, low ferritin (iron stores). Mine was at 5. I understand that you don't want the tests done, but it really depends on your age. My GI doc told me that he would not have done it if my iron was low and I was in my 20s and 30s; however, being 43, I was on the "egde" of being more high risk for GI bleeding.

I had the tests and they did find bleeding in my stomach which was a surprise. But the GI doc doesn't think that is causing the low iron. I am also treated for reflux and we suspect that the long-term use of Prilosec, having a period, AND the stomach bleeding may be the the causes.

I know that 19 is in the normal range but it does make you wonder if it will continue to go down. You really don't want to let it go to far as it is very hard to bring up.

It would be unusual for an anti-reflux diet to cause iron deficiency unless you stopped eating all meat.

I don 't know what your dr is talking about, buy any search on the web for the diagnosistics related to iron deficiceny/depletion without anemia, or iron deficiency anemia says that the first indice to fall in a pre anemia situation is the serum ferritin. The Hb does not usually fall until after total iron depletion is reached, beyond the low range, e.g. 9mg/l serum ferritin. Therefore, it is the most accurate and effective way to asses body iron stores.

19 is a tricky number. I was 18, now 20 after supplementing a month. All drs, including a hematologist, said i was in range, therefore I am fine. But, after investigating on the web, I find that medical literature says differently, and low ferrtin can be a problem. Some studies state that the depletion stage is reached when one has a ferritin under 16. Others use lower figures like 12. But, studies discuss that people who have deficiency wihtout anemia/depletion, indicate that levels below 50 are helped by supplementing in terms of raising work output and excersie stamina, for instance.

As to sources, if your Hb and other blood indicators are in the normal range, and only the serum ferritin is low, it is likely not a very serious anemia condition, as some here on this board do have.

First, let me say that your dr is a good dr to be taking the ferritin issue seriously at this time for you, as most would not. Incidentally, are you fatigued etc?

Looking for a bleed is a fine idea. The other possiblities are malapsorbtion, esp celiac disease, so you may want to look there. Also, endocrine disease, esp of the thyroid, has an influence on anemic situations of both iron and b12. Ask him if he would run antibodies tests for celiac for you, and a thyroid panel including TSH, free T4, free T3 and anti thyroid anti bodies tests (anti TPO TGab). :wave:
