Mel52 -
I had my spleen removed in 1995. When I had the pretest, my spleen was normal sized, but when they did the actual surgery 5 days later, it was the size of a football as well. My surgery took twice the time they estimated, but recovery went very well. I've done well since the surgery, but it hasn't stopped me from getting hemolytic anemia - I actually got the AIHA after I had my spleen removed.

The jaundice is a sign that your hemolytic anemia is acting up. Your body is destroying more red cells than the liver can filter, and so the waste product seeps out and makes your skin yellow. Predisone will stop that. Jaundice is a symptom that the hemolytic anemia is active.

Good luck with the surgery. REcovery can be painful, so take it easy. Spitting and laughing after surgery cause pain, so go easy on the funny movies as you're recovering.

Best of luck to you!
