Iron at 10
May 14, 2007
i recently picked up my blood work at the lab, because fow 2 weeks i have been trying to get the dr's to return my phone call to no avail. it shows the reference range to be 20-50, so 10 sounds low. about a month before, CBC was normal, the lower end of normal, a different doc said it was fine. i have had a ton of problems in the past year i fear were infectuous, but so far nothing has come up. should i be on iron? i am scared because i have had swollen glands for 9 months, and low grade fevers as well. the worst of it is oral mucosal disease. no answers, but this iron thing is really bothering me, like i said dr. never even called me back.

If the test you are referring to is serum iron, I would not be worried with a 10, especially since your other numbers are in the normal range. Serum iron flucuates greatly, even thoughout the day, so depending on if you had eaten or not eaten or when you last ate around the blood draw, will greatly reflect those results.

Now if you were talking about a ferritin test, I would be more concered. But the reference range you pointed out doesn't seem to be the range for ferritin (that is usually 12-250 or 10-250).
