You aren't anemic (yet) but you have iron deficiency.

A children's multivitamin has just as much iron as an adults multivitamin. In fact, I am taking one Flintstone vitamin a day for the iron and it gives me no side effects. Maybe this is why your endo prescribed it?? Good to know that two of them are okay. I wanted to take two but was worried about taking too much of the other vitamins.

Ideally, if you want your iron stores to increase quickly, you should be taking higher doses of iron, but these high doses can be very harsh. Just know that the Flinstone's will work, but very slowly.

I had my thyroid removed 12 years ago due to cancer but my anemia didn't start until about 18 months ago. I am 43 and, most likely, mine is caused by years of somewhat heavy periods. The thyroid issues may not be helping anything, but I don't believe they are the cause.

It is important to find out why your iron stores are low though. Do you have the risk factors for GI bleeding (age, family history etc). I was given a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy to rule out this type of bleeding which is one of the more common reasons for iron deficiency.
Hello all!!
I had an appointment with my endo yesterday. He said although my hemocrit is within normal range, my ferritin is very low at 4. My iron is a 10. Would this indicate anemia? My doc told me to take 2 Flintstone vitamins a day and that should help. Does a children's vitamin contain enough iron for an adult? Also, I had my thyroid removed last October. Does low ferritin have anything to do with being hypothyroid? I am very tired all of the time. I fall asleep at very inapproprite times (like at a stoplight when I'm driving), but can't seem to sleep at night. I went for a sleep study last week, but haven't heard anything yet. My doc suspects restless leg syndrome.

Any info that anybody has would be greatly appreciated!!!!

BTW, I think Sonic is getting tired of me ordering just ice everyday!!!!:D They have the best ice!!!
