I would call your doctor's office back and ask them to write a prescription for something more specific than just "iron pills". If it's available over the counter, I am sure the pharmacist will let you know. There are many types of iron supplements, each is absorbed a little differently and the side effects may be different as well.

I just started taking the prescription [U]Chromagen Forte [/U]2 weeks ago for anemia and very low ferritin levels. So far, minimal to no side effects... much better than the over the counter 'iron pills' I used to take. The downside was it was not a 'preferred' medication in my insurance plan, but I am going to continue with it. It is similar to another medication I took years ago called Niferex.
