Hi--Your mom is very anemic! I really hope she finds the cause of her problem. There are a lot of things that can cause iron defficient anemia (what it looks like your mom has)--I searched for all the cuases on the internet, and nothing really seemed to fit well for me. Luckily I found a good GI doctor who decided to test me for celiac disease. I would never have guessed it, but I tested highly positive in my blood work (I'm waiting for my endoscopy next week to confirm it through biopsy of the small intestine). I also have struggled with anemia for long periods of time, though luckily not as severe as your mother.

Celiac causes damage to the small intestine through an autoimmune response to gluten, making the intestine unable to absorb many nutrients, especially iron. Many people are diagnosed because of unexplained iron deficiency.

Anyway, there are obviously many possible causes for your mother's condition. Some are very serious, some less so. Celiac does not often come to mind for many dr's in the US, I don't know about South Africa, so it's something that might be worth mentioning to the doctor.

Good luck to your mom and let us know how she's doing.
