I don't know is there really is a definitive way to tell. My Hematologist told me that I didn't notice the anemia at 8.5 Hgb and 2 ferritin because it came on slowly. Mine was due to heavy periods they say. This way it takes years to deplete iron stores and become IDA. So your tolerance of anemia is proportional to the rate of development.

If you had a major blood loss of another form then it would happen much quicker and you would have more profound symptoms because the body doesn't have time to adjust. Symptoms with rapidly developing anemia are much more noticeable.

If your children are young and you had them close in time perhaps you were low in iron from childbirth and never recovered your iron stores. Anemia and/or a low ferritin can be due to more than one reason. FLFLOWERGIRL:)

I can not tell you what the general time would be, but my ferritin starts dropping after about 6 months. I get bloodwork done every 2 months and I have had 10 iv infusions in the past year. With this last bloodwork my hemoglobin stayed about 12, but my ferritin went from 96 to 35 since the last bloodwork 2 months ago. I do not have a real reason why this happens. Because your a woman the period is always a good place to put blame. So now I am ready to go back for an iron refill for the next 5 weeks (once a week). If anyone has a real answer, please let me know. Take care
