Hello All!! My name is Shawna and I am new to the boards. I am gonna try to explain my situation without going on and on (I have a tendancy to do that from time to time, LOL)
I had gastric bypass 5 years ago.
I went to the dr. Oct 06 and she said I was anemic and put me on two iron tablets a day, plus my multi. I lost my insurance and couldn't go back for recheck but I kept up with taking 2 irons a day.
Went to new dr. in Nov 07 and she ran the blood tests and said I am still anemic and to up my iron tablets (ferrous gluconate) to 4 per day (2 tabs twice per day) plus prenatal vit. She retested in 6 weeks and said my iron was even lower and we needed to take a more aggressive approach. She sent me to the GI dr and he ordered a endoscopy and colonoscopy. I just had that last week and everything was fine.
Next Tuesday I go to see a hematologist.
I decided today that I needed a copy of all of my labs so that I could see how all my numbers compared from Oct 06 to Nov 07 and my retesting in Jan 08.
So I got my numbers and the only thing that looks off now is my iron, iron binding and iron saturation. My numbers are: (Nov number and then Jan number)
Iron: 25 then 20 Normal= 44-140 (My number back in 06 for this was 12)
Iron binding: 412 then 419 Normal= 200-400
Iron saturation 6 then 5 Normail= 11-56

In Oct 06 my Hgb, Hct, Mcv,Mch and Mchc were all low but now they are in the normal range--but on the lowest end of normal.

In Oct 06 my ferritin was 1 with normal being 13-150. I cannot find the ferritin number on my recent labs...does this go by another name?

I guess I just need to connect with people who understand what I am going through. My family tries to understand, but it seems like people hear anemia and don't think of it as something super serious and it doesn't seem like people really understand all the side effects that are associated with anemia.

Thanks for reading!! :)
